Innovative Specialist Medicines
Founded in 2002 by experienced industry executives, CURATIS is a privately owned specialty pharmaceutical company based in Switzerland.
"We focus on the acquisition, development and commercialisation of innovative medicines for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of rare and specialty care diseases."
A rare disease, often referred to as an orphan disease, is any disease that affects a small percentage of the population. Most rare diseases are genetic, and thus are present throughout the person's entire life. Many rare diseases appear early in life, and about 30% of children with rare diseases will die before reaching their fifth birthday.
Examples for rare diseases are Chorea Huntington, CMV retinitis or esophageal varices bleeding.
The European Organisation for Rare Diseases (EURORDIS) estimates that as many as 5,000 to 7,000 distinct rare diseases exist, and this affects as much as 6% to 8% of the population of the European Union. Currently, there are no treatments for the vast majority of rare diseases.
Specialty Care Diseases
Specialty care diseases are mostly serious diseases with high unmet medical need. Some specialty care diseases such as certain forms of cancer or central nervous system disorders are highly prevalent.
Examples of specialty care diseases include CMV retinitis, epilepsy or bladder cancer.
Patients that suffer from specialty care diseases are primarily treated by specialist physicians and often need to be treated in a hospital.
